Atlanta Falcons sign veteran LB Nick Kwiatkoski to 1 Year Deal

The Atlanta Falcons are not a team that figures to be a huge factor in 2022 by any means, however they added some much needed depth at the linebacker position on Thursday. Former Bears and Raiders linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski inked a 1 Year deal in Atlanta. This is a huge move by the Falcons as they needed some more depth at the position and quite frankly some more talent. Atlanta's defense ranked near dead last in overall defense in 2021 at 29th and was in desperate need of an over haul this off season. Which the Falcons picked up on and also seem to be doing with the rest of the roster. Kwiatkoski joins fellow veteran linebacker Deon Jones as well as free agent additions, Lorenzo Carter and Rashaan Evans. The Falcons also added defensive help via the NFL Draft in April with linebacker Troy Anderson and pass rushers Arnold Ebiketie and DeAngelo Malone.

This is sure to be a crowded linebacker room come training camp but expect once the dust settles for Kwiatkoski to carve out at least a rotational role within this defense. With consistent playing time Kwiatkoski can be a force to mess with, in 2020 when starting in 12 games for the Raiders he compiled 81 total tackles, 1 sack, and 1 interception. That is unfortunately the concern however with Kwiatkoski as 2020 was the only time in his 6 year career he has started 10 or more games in a season. Over those six seasons in the NFL the veteran linebacker has started in roughly 44% of games and was held out for most of 2021 with an ankle injury. Still making the best use of those starts sitting with 286 total tackles, 7 sacks, and 2 interceptions for a career to date. If the Falcons are fortunate enough to keep Kwiatkoski on the field in 2022 they could truly have a gem on there hands with such a talented young linebacker despite the injury concerns.
